A thumb spica is used to immobilise the joint at the base of the thumb and allow the joint to be rested, thereby easing any pain or discomfort associated with normal or overuse.
It also provides a mild bracing effect to protect the base of the thumb. As this thumb spia only immobilises the thumb, it does not interfere with the movement of the fingers. It also allows movement of the end joint of the thumb and therefore does not reduce hand function significantly.
